Remembrance Day

This August marked the centenary of the beginning of World War 1, the war to end all wars. Over the last few years, the remaining WW1 veterans have died and this pivotal moment has passed from personal memories to the annals of history.  The World Remembers, a non-profit Canadian organization with members including the Rt. Honourable Paul Martin, the Rt. Honourable Adrienne Clarkson and other prominent Canadians, have built a unique educational initiative. With special software provided, Rotherglen School will be displaying the names of the 68,000 Canadian soldiers killed in WW1 as well as the other names of the soldiers killed from other WW1 nations.  The name of each soldier who lost his life will be displayed, on our foyer television, in the 100th year after his death. Each will be programmed to appear in the exact year, month, day/night, hour and minute. Our students will be able to utilize The World Remembers website to find the moment that any name will be displayed and to begin to search the history behind each name. This project will take place for a number of consecutive weeks in each Centenary year. Students will participate in our Remembrance Day Assembly on November 11, 2014 to honour all of the brave men and women who have lost their lives in service to our nation.
