Legacy Project

In Leadership class, the Grade 8 students have been focusing on the REACH Legacy Project. This unique project challenges our students to give back to their community by finding a common cause to support. The students spend a great deal of time researching and then selecting one of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as a focus.  The MDGs were instituted as part of the UN Millennium Declaration in 2000, with a completion date of 2015 and include:

1. Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger

2. Achieving universal primary education

3. Promoting gender equality and empowering women

4. Reducing child mortality rates

5. Improving maternal health

6. Combating HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases

7. Ensuring environmental sustainability

8. Developing a global partnership for development.

Students research local agencies and select one whose purpose exemplifies their chosen Millennium Goal. They then create a multi-media report to be presented to a committee of Rotherglen staff and Grade 7 students at the end of February. The panel will choose one organization to receive a $5000 donation from the REACH Foundation. For the remainder of the school year, fundraising activities will help to raise awareness and additional funds for the local agency. We believe this exciting and creative process provides our students the opportunity to explore possibilities, and engage in active leadership.
