Environmental Committee News – Oakville Elementary Campus

The Environmental Committee is holding a used battery and ink jet cartridge collection.  Recycling batteries is good for the environment.  It keeps them out of landfill, where heavy metals may leak into the ground when the battery casing corrodes, causing soil and water pollution.  If batteries are incinerated with household waste, the heavy metals may cause air pollution.  Each year millions of tons of cartridges are dumped in landfills.  Once there, they release toxins and hazardous waste materials into the environment over the decades they take to decompose.  Reusing cartridges means a significant reduction in both energy and resources.  Containers have been set up in the school’s front foyer for used batteries and used ink jet cartridges.  The Environmental Committee will ensure the collected items are disposed of in a safe and environmentally friendly way.
