Grade 5 Science
The students in Grade 5 enjoyed an interactive workshop presented by engineer Rachelle of Scientists in School. Rachelle led the students through a series of experiments and discussions related to testing structures on a homemade earthquake table! The students were asked to consider which natural forces act on buildings on a regular basis, and what qualities make structures strong and stable. The students were then tasked with building several paper structures and modifying each new structure using techniques such as base absorption, tuned mass dampeners and cross bracing. They were asked what they observed with each new modification and which technique they would use if they were to create their own building. Finally, the students were introduced to specific internal forces like tension and compression and how to use knowledge of the centre of mass and weight distribution to create a balanced popsicle stick structure.
