Grade 6 Students have an “Out-of-this-World” Experience
The Grade 6 students participated in the ‘Celestial Sleuths’ workshop led by Scientists in School. Through a variety of interesting experiments and hands-on activities, the students explored the components of our solar system and developed a better understanding of the scale of the universe. Students used interactive models to study the earth’s rotation and tilt, the earth’s orbit around the sun, as well as the moon’s orbit around the earth. Through these investigations, the students discovered why we experiences daytime/nighttime, the seasons, moon phases, and eclipses. Students experienced the challenges faced by astronauts in space, and gained an awareness of Canada’s contribution to the International Space Station by making their own “end effector” (grasping mechanism on Canadarm).
