Grade 7 Welcomes Author, Sharon McKay

Author Sharon McKay visited Rotherglen School and inspired our Grade 7 students through discussing her novels, Thunder Over Kandahar and War Brothers. Ms. McKay’s novels discuss both current and past issues in different parts of the world.  She shared with the students what life is like for civilians living under Taliban rule in Afghanistan, and the issue of child abduction and soldiery in Uganda. She helped the students understand the context of her novels through discussing her real life experiences in both countries. Ms. McKay shared with the Grade 7 students the on-site research she did before writing her novels, which made the setting and characters very authentic for her readers. Ms. McKay has helped students to become educated on different global issues through literature by creating fascinating story lines and characters that make students want to read.
