January in Grade One

This entry was posted in Oakville Primary News.
After a joyful and relaxing winter break, the students in Grade 1 returned to school refreshed and eager to learn. As part of our ongoing mindfulness practice, we start each day with a breathing and stretching exercise called “Rainbow Breath”. This helps us prepare our minds for learning so we can begin our work from a calm and focused place. We slowly follow the video on the SmartBoard as we lift and lower our arms in a rainbow shape. What a fantastic way to start the day!

One of the most popular activities in Grade 1 is our “Classroom Planetarium”. Students can gaze at the stars and look for their favourite constellation all from the comforts of our darkened cloakroom. The Library is another popular spot to work quietly with a friend or curl up on the couch and read a good book.

As a class, we have also spent a lot of time discussing the Character Education topic of “Respect”. We talked about the importance of listening to the thoughts and ideas of others, and treating one another the way that we would like to be treated.

However, the highlight in Grade 1 this month was preparing for our Learning Showcase. The parents were invited to come into our class and observe the amazing Montessori work that we do each day. We tested the parents on their knowledge of the Map of North America, carrying and borrowing with 4 digit subtraction questions, and telling time!

If January was this much fun…we can hardly wait to see what’s in store for us in February!
