Grade 2 – Having Fun While Reading

This entry was posted in Oakville Elementary News, Rotherglen News.

In order to guide a child when reading, we need to spark joy and wonder in their imaginations. We are always talking about different reading strategies that help a child connect to a text, gather meaning from what they read, while also finding excitement in the many adventures and learning opportunities that books can provide. We have recently been practising visualization; the ability to imagine and create a picture in your mind of what the author has written. This week, we all read a poem by Jack Prelutsky called My Neighbour’s Dog Is Purple. While reading the poem, the children were asked to carefully add details to what they thought this creature might look like. By the end of the poem, the children were so surprised and full of laughter to find out that the neighbour’s dog was actually a crocodile.
